The City of Shelbyville is accepting applications for Certified Police Officer to establish an eligibility
list.
PLEASE NOTE: Individuals can qualify under two separate requirements

1) must have a minimum eighteen (18) months experience out of the last three (3) years 
employed as a full-time police officer; graduated from a full-time certified police 
academy and successfully completed probation in previous position.

2) minimum three (3) years’ experience out of the last five (5) years employed as a full-time 
police officer; graduated from a full-time certified police academy or a part-time certified 
police academy with the full-time transition course.

All individual’s training and experience must either qualify or would likely qualify the officer to 
become certified in the State of Illinois upon written request to the Illinois Law Enforcement Training 
and Standards Board.

Additional requirements:

  • U.S. citizenship; high school graduate or GED; 
    corrected visual sharpness minimum 20/40;
  • ability to meet and comply with the department’s tattoo policy;
  • no felony convictions or certain misdemeanors; t
  • he ability to pass all required phases of the examination;
  • a driver’s license at time of hire and valid FOID card within 12 months of hire.
  • At the time of application, the candidate must provide certification of successful completion from a 
    full-time certified police academy and a letter indicating employment dates as a police officer on the 
    police department’s letterhead.

The selection process for the Certified Police Officer includes oral interviews with the Board of 
Police Commissioners. The process and the minimum qualifications are dictated by the Board's 
Rules and Regulations.


Please submit the following at time of application:

  • A copy of your certification as a full-time  Permanent Police Officer as defined in 50 ILCS 705/1, et seq by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board.
  • A copy of your High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • A copy of a Valid Driver's License.

Applications will be accepted until 3:00 p.m. on December 19, 2024 at the City Clerk’s office in the  Municipal Building, 170 E. Main Street, Shelbyville.

First Year Patrolman (After 12 months) $52,665.60
P.M. Officer - After 12 months $53,185.60
